Your brain has an incredible capacity to move past adverse events. EMDR helps activate your brain’s natural processing abilities to work through these experiences without having to relive them in detail.

What makes EMDR different:

  • You don’t have to tell the whole story of your accident over and over if you don’t want to
  • It works with your brain’s natural healing mechanisms
  • Many people find they get to the root of the impact faster than with traditional talk therapy alone

EMDR is especially helpful if you find yourself “stuck” replaying the accident, avoiding driving or certain routes, or having strong physical reactions when reminded of what happened.

No, you don’t need a referral for the first 12 weeks. Within the first 12 weeks after your accident, you can access counselling directly without a doctor’s note or medical referral. Just contact us with your ICBC claim number and we’ll get you started.
If you need support beyond the initial 12 weeks, you’ll need a referral from your doctor or healthcare provider indicating that continued counselling is necessary for your recovery. We can help guide you through this process and work with your ICBC recovery team to request additional sessions.
You’re automatically pre-approved for 12 counselling sessions within the first 12 weeks after your accident under ICBC’s Enhanced Care program. This coverage is available regardless of who was at fault in the accident.
After the initial 12 sessions, you may be eligible for additional counselling through ICBC’s Enhanced Accident Benefits. This requires working with your ICBC recovery team and typically needs a referral from your healthcare provider.

ICBC covers up to $157 per counselling session for the first 12 pre-approved sessions. If your counsellor’s rate is higher than $157, you would be responsible for the difference. At Venturous, we work within ICBC’s coverage rates for these initial sessions, so there’s no out-of-pocket cost to you.

The 12 pre-approved counselling sessions must be used within the first 12 weeks (84 days) after your accident. This doesn’t mean you need to complete all 12 sessions within that timeframe – it means you need to start accessing counselling within those first 12 weeks to qualify for automatic pre-approval.

You can still access support. While the 12 pre-approved sessions are available within the first 12 weeks, you can still apply for coverage later. Sometimes trauma responses don’t show up immediately, and that’s completely normal.
If more than 12 weeks have passed since your accident, you may need:
  • A referral from your doctor or healthcare provider
  • Approval from your ICBC recovery team
  • Documentation of how the accident has impacted your mental health
Delayed trauma responses are common and ICBC recognizes this. We can help you gather the necessary documentation and advocate for your need for counselling support.

We can work with your ICBC recovery team to request additional sessions based on your ongoing needs. Many people find that trauma recovery takes longer than 12 weeks, and that’s completely valid. We’ll provide the documentation and clinical rationale to support your request for continued care, and help you navigate this process.

There’s no timeline for trauma recovery, and there’s nothing wrong with you. Our culture often pushes people to “move on” quickly, but healing happens at its own pace. Real life doesn’t pause for trauma recovery.
